Tomb Sculpture of Jules Dalou: Père Lachaise
Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902) - the French poet of death - created some of the most memorable sculptures of the late nineteenth century, many of them located in the cemeteries of Paris. The Cimetière du Père Lachaise in Paris, a veritable Dalou museum, contains no less than seven of his sculptural works for the tombs within the cemetery. Although the most famous of these is his gisant sculpture of the journalist Victor Noir, others there, such as the gisant of Louis-Auguste Blanqui and the sculptural bust and life-sized allegorical figure for the tomb of Charles Floquet, are equally dramatic. The large majority of professional sculptors of the period truly made their living taking commissions for tomb sculptures but few produced works of the type of bravado and realism as those by Dalou. His own tomb, at Cimetière du Montparnasse, is sedate: a plain slab marks the grave with his name and that of his beloved wife and daughter; his own grave is a quiet, modest memorial to a family man whose funeral sculptures for others were larger than life. Below are images of Dalou's seven known works for Père Lachaise.
